This year I had the opportunity to be part of the Tri-City Tech Comm Conference, which is hosted by the Association of Professional and Technical Writers and the Department of Rhetoric and Professional Writing at Saginaw Valley State University. Check out the video I made about my journey from studying technical writing to running a technical writing service, as well as some amazing videos created by my peers!

About the Presentation
This presentation focuses on my journey as a communication consultant at Allison Stein Consulting, LLC, and a recent alum of the Professional and Technical Writing program at Saginaw Valley State University. I discuss strategies for transforming a portfolio from an academic document to a professional document, promoting community in digital spaces, engaging with multiple audiences, and cultivating an authentic voice on social media and web content platforms. I touch on a number of supporting topics, such as how to reframe website building as ecosystem building between and among web pages and how to establish and communicate categories of professional development within months of earning a bachelor’s degree. In addition to exploring the set of strategies that drives my design choices in this website and business ecosystem, I share my six-month plan to launch an independent consultancy, catalog the practices I implemented and happy accidents I encountered, and provide a listing of key activities that may serve as a roadmap for other technical communication professionals with similar goals.
